Flying Unfriendly Skies

Since my daughter's job has her flying twice a week, I've been concerned about the safety of flying. Since she's started the flying weekly, her rate of colds has gone up dramatically. She's experienced more than once being stuck on a plane for hours for some holdup. Last week it was a two hour delay because no one was their to allow them to exit the plane.

So you can imagine where my mind went when I read that last February, Bangkok authorities arrested a man with more than 230 animals in his carry-on bag. There were spiders, snakes, tortoises, squirrels and more. I like to think airport security would catch such here in the US, but one or two might slip by. Yuck.

Have you ever observed someone with something in a carry-on bag that made me uncomfortable?

What would scare you the most of a plane: a coughing, congested person or a spider or snake?

I don't think I'd like to be around either one. Did I mention I will never fly by choice again unless there's an emergency I have to get to? TSA is one reason. Feeling insecure about plane maintenance and pilot alertness is another. I guess I should stop reading the papers.

tourism/travel of any kind is a hard business to be in, many many different people. I'd be most concerned with the colds- personally.

I do not know what would scare me on a airplane today, for it's been years since I've been on an airplane. Now, with flue season I hope your daughter stays safe and healthy.

I can't say I've seen anything in someone's carry-on luggage that concerned me. I did get a good laugh one time when I saw a guy who couldn't understand why he couldn't take his tool box on the plane. Apparently he had been living in a cave for a few years.

This is going to sound a bit silly but having recently flown from Boston to Guam (where I will be staying until Feb 21) what made me somewhat nervous was the large amount of people who joined our flight from Japan to Guam who were wearing surgical masks. I kept wondering if they were trying to to avoid catching something or did they have something that they did not want anyone else to know about.

I don't think I've ever seen anything that concerned me other than, as much as I hate to say it, certain nationalities right after the 9-11 attack. Logically I realize that anyone from anywhere could be a terrorist, but it was hard for me for a while

I think that was true of much of the nation. It was a wake-up call to many when the next terrorist was a home-grown Caucasian.
